About

Norwegian cellist Benjamin Lund Tomter is emerging as one of the most distinctive voices of his generation, equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral leader. His playing is recognized for its expressive intensity, clarity of musical vision, and a deep commitment to collaborative artistry.
Benjamin is currently completing his Master’s degree at the Norwegian Academy of Music under Professor Torleif Thedéen, where he also earned his Bachelor’s degree. From 2023 to 2025, he is a Fellow of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra — an exclusive orchestral academy with only one cello position every two years. During his fellowship, he has participated in extensive national and international tours, including Finland and China, and has been offered professional engagements beyond the fellowship quota, totaling twelve projects.

In 2026, Benjamin was named Winner of the Dextra Musica Audition for Establishing Artists, and was awarded a five-year loan of a rare Simon Sacconi cello — formerly the primary instrument of Gaspar Cassadó. This recognition marks a significant milestone in his artistic development and international trajectory.
His recent orchestral engagements include a six-month contract as Co-Principal Cello with Odense Symphony Orchestra and multiple projects as Co-Principal with Malmö Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as Acting 2nd Principal Cello with Odense Symphony Orchestra (broadcast live on Danish Radio), and has appeared in productions with the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, performing in Giselle, The Nutcracker, and Eugene Onegin. In 2025–2026, he was selected for trial as Principal Cello with the SSO in Hanoi, Vietnam, and was a finalist for a permanent position with Ensemble MidtVest, one of Denmark’s leading professional chamber ensembles.
A devoted chamber musician, Benjamin performs regularly at leading festivals including the Moritzburg Festival, Oslo Chamber Music Festival, Bergen International Festival, Fjord Classics, Glogerfestspillene, Valdres Sommersymfoni, Fartein Valen Festival, and Asker Chamber Music Festival.
He has collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists such as Jan Vogler, Christian Ihle Hadland, Dénes Várjon, Stephen Waarts, Håkon Austbø, and Tor Johan Bøen, among many others. From 2021 to 2024, he held regular professional engagements with MiNensemblet (30+ concerts), performing core chamber repertoire. He has also participated annually in the prestigious “Meisterschüler Meister” masterclass at Schloss Neuhardenberg under the guidance of Jan Vogler.

As a soloist, Benjamin has performed both cello concertos by Joseph Haydn and the Cello Concerto by Robert Schumann with orchestras in Norway, Italy, and Greece. He has appeared as soloist at the Oslo Chamber Music Festival and given recitals at venues including Gamle Raadhus Scene and Blaafarveværket (Dextra Musica series).
His performances have been broadcast nationally and internationally, including live appearances on NRK (Virtuos competition finalist) and German national radio from the opening concert of the Moritzburg Festival. He has contributed to several professional recordings, including releases on SIMAX and projects with Telemark Chamber Orchestra and Nordic Voices.
Alongside his performing career, Benjamin is active as a pedagogue. He has taught at the NMH Talent Development Program, Foss Upper Secondary School, and maintains private students. He has also worked as a chamber music coach at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
With leadership experience as principal cellist at the Moritzburg Festival Orchestra (including performances at Konzerthaus Berlin and Dresden Kulturpalast), growing international orchestral engagements, and a strong artistic presence within the Nordic chamber music scene, Benjamin Lund Tomter continues to shape a multifaceted and ambitious career at the highest professional level.
